On this Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2021, UA Dance remembers the Selma to Montgomery voting rights march led by Dr. King in March 1965. We are proud to have taken part in the 50th anniversary commemoration that took place in March 2015. Professor Melissa Lowe received an invitation from Alabama Gov. Robert J. Bentley and under her coordination, faculty member Barbea Williams choreographed a piece and traveled with now School of Dance alumni, Kennedy Thomas and Kevyn Butler to Alabama where they performed on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol in a nationally televised ceremony. Bernice King, Dr. King’s daughter, was among the featured speakers. Thomas and Butler also performed in educational programming designed for youth and the three participated in lectures and discussions.

Of the experience, Lowe said, “This is one of my high points in all of my years of teaching. When we can send a dancer to an event that is of national importance, it not only provides great visibility and prestige for us, but it is a great opportunity for our dancers.”

Check out the dance and film collaboration by UArizona Dance faculty member Autumn Eckman and artist Jonathan Marquis, "Shape-less," in the UAMA's online exhibition "Picturing 2020: A Community Reflects." The exhibition will be on view (virtually) September 26, 2020 - March 28, 2021 at artmuseum.arizona.edu
.
"Shape-less" is about stepping into the world after quarantine; and was filmed, socially distant, near the location where the Bighorn Fire broke out—only one day before. The film is set to music by pianist Robert LeGendre. Eckman and Marquis dedicated the film to the community of helpers who contained the fire.
.
Production of this project was supported in part by a grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts.

Dear Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase Community,

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the trajectory of COVID-19 in the coming months, we have made the difficult decision to postpone Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase 2020.

We are closely following trends in case numbers and health guidelines. The Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase may be rescheduled for Spring 2021. We will continue to send updates as we know more about AJDS future dates.

With deep appreciation & gratitude for all of our AJDS participants, we look forward to our next event.

>>> Faculty Highlight <<< Join us in wishing a happy retirement to Associate Professor AMY ERNST!
Ms. Ernst’s career began as a featured dancer, touring internationally with the Lewitzky dance company for over a decade. After her work with the company, Amy was hired by the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Inglewood, California as a physical therapist for three and a half years. In 1995, after receiving her MFA in dance from the University of Washington-Seattle and teaching at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ms. Ernst joined the UA School of Dance faculty. Amy has shared her insight and wisdom of dance with generations of young artists, teaching all levels of Modern Dance Technique and Choreography, Dance Injury Prevention, Dance Kinesiology, and Biomechanics for Dance.
During her time at the University of Arizona, Amy was a teacher, a choreographer, a mentor, a friend, and most importantly, family.
Congratulations Amy! We can’t thank you enough! 💗
