On February 15th, Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell, the Artistic Director of Hubbard Street Dance
Chicago, organized a private audition for School of Dance students. This event provided
students with the invaluable opportunity to showcase their talents and audition for Hubbard
Street’s prestigious summer dance intensives, while facilitating a direct interaction with Linda-
Denise Fisher-Harrell.
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago hosts two summer programs, CREATE Summer Intensive and
EXPLORE Summer Intensive. CREATE Summer Intensive, a four-week program tailored for
early career dancers aged 18-25, immerses participants in the exhilarating world of
choreography. Offering an experience akin to the life of a professional dancer, CREATE delves
deep into the choreographic process. Dancers engage in exploration, research, and
collaboration alongside a vibrant cohort of choreographers, fostering creativity and artistic
growth. EXPLORE Summer Intensive offers a diverse array of technique classes and elective
options designed to ignite dancers’ passions and refine their skills. With the freedom to select a
technique track, participants can customize their experience to suit their artistic interests and
aspirations. Additionally, dancers have the opportunity to learn repertory excerpts from Hubbard
Street’s esteemed artists, gaining insight into the company’s rich repertoire and performance
techniques.
Ava Furukawa, a Junior at the School of Dance, fondly reflects on her audition experience,
expressing deep appreciation for the abundant opportunities offered by the school. She
articulates the convenience of having guest artists come directly to the school, affording School
of Dance students the chance to exhibit their artistry within their comfortable, familiar home
environment. Ava further emphasizes how these experiences not only streamline the audition
process but also play a crucial role in preparing aspiring dancers like herself for successful
careers in the future.
