The University of Arizona School of Dance recently had the honor of hosting esteemed choreographer Peter Chu for a week-long residency. This immersive experience provided our dancers with a unique opportunity to engage with Chu’s innovative movement philosophies, setting the stage for an original piece to be introduced in the upcoming fall semester.
Originally from Cocoa Beach, Florida, Peter Chu began his artistic journey as a competitive gymnast before transitioning to dance. He refined his craft at The Juilliard School, where he was awarded the Hector Zaraspe Prize for Choreography upon graduation. Chu’s dynamic career includes performances with renowned companies such as Ballet Jazz de Montréal and Crystal Pite’s Kidd Pivot. In 2008, he founded chuthis., a project-based company that merges innovative lighting and sound with contemporary movement, reflecting his commitment to pushing the boundaries of dance.
The connections and insights gained during this residency have laid a solid foundation for the forthcoming collaboration. We eagerly anticipate Peter Chu’s return in the fall to continue this creative journey, culminating in a performance that will undoubtedly enrich our community’s artistic landscape.
