Tucson, Arizona ˗ Most people look at a closet or cabinet and see a space to hang clothes or to store dishes. Not so for UA Dance faculty member Sam Watson. His new project, SIDE SHOW, which has been more than a year in the making, transforms the most unlikely places into mini venues for dance performance. Led through the experience by dancer-guides, audience members travel through the fifty-minute performance to view a series of eight dance vignettes.

To bring his vision to fruition, Watson worked with a number of collaborators. Ryan Moore, in-house UA Dance Senior Technical Director whose work has included lighting for Bernstein’s Mass and Steppin’ Out Live with Ben Vereen as well as for UA Dance, created atmospheric lighting for the outdoor and indoor pathways that audience members traverse to view the dances. Lighting designer Daniel Kersh, known for his work locally with Dusk Music Festival and Artifact Dance Project and for his work nationally with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, created lighting installations for each dance vignette. LED strips create dimension along the walls of a narrow hallway and a mass of found plastic bags and wrappers becomes a sculptural chandelier when lit from the inside. Scenic artist, Taryn Wintersteen, whose credits include stage productions and museum exhibitions, expertly created a Rococo curio cabinet that serves as the stage for one vignette, and UA Dance pianist Mark Schafer fittingly provides the soundtrack on toy piano for a dance that uses the doorway of a storage closet as its proscenium. In total, a cast of more than sixty dancers brings this unique performance experience to life.

This interactive, intimate and immersive dance performance is ultimately indescribable. SIDE SHOW is worth experiencing first-hand. Come see for yourself.
