Dr. Perpener III

John O. Perpener III is a dance historian and independent scholar who currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received his Ph.D. in Performance Studies from New York University and his MFA in Dance from Southern Methodist University.

The Lecture

Dr. John O. Perpener III will share his reflections on the experiences and influences that have shaped his approach to researching and teaching dance history in a way that includes a diverse range of dancers and choreographers, some of whom have been left out of more traditional approaches to dance history in academia. He will delve into social and political matters as they relate to the arts, as he recognizes that history can be a documentation of intertwined threads of human existence, including narratives that speak of the inhumanity, oppression, and other destructive forces that different groups of people have inflicted on each other throughout time.
