The University of Arizona School of Dance is thrilled to announce the launch of our new video
Director Profile: Who is Duane Cyrus? In this video, we delve into
the rich background and achievements of our school’s director, Duane Cyrus.

Duane Cyrus is a multi–talented performer, producer, choreographer, educator, and author.
With a background in dance that includes performances with the Alvin Ailey American Dance
Theater, Martha Graham Dance Company, The Lion King, and Carousel, among others, Duane
has established himself as a prominent figure in the dance community. He is also the co–author
and editor of the book “Vital Grace – The Black Male Dancer”, a celebration of black men in
dance through photography.

Duane holds a BFA from the Juilliard School and an MFA from the University of Illinois. He has
been nominated for a Bessie Award for his performance in Cynthia Oliver’s “Virago Man Dem”,
and has received two Choreography fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council. In
addition, Duane has been recognized for his contributions to dance education, receiving the
University Dance Educator of the Year award from the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics,
Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

Duane’s extensive experience in the dance world has seen him serve as faculty or instructor for
prestigious programs such as the Joffrey/New School BFA Program and the Hartt School Actor’s
Training Program, as well as teaching at American Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre,
Aileycamp, and Charlotte Ballet. He has received grants from organizations such as the National
Endowment for the Arts, the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro, and the Bricolage Arts
Festival, among others.

We hope that this video will give you a deeper understanding of Duane’s accomplishments and
the expertise he brings to our school as its director. Join us as we learn more about this
remarkable artist and the impact he has made on the world of dance.
