Tucson, Arizona ˗ Five works come together to create a powerful Premium Blend program.
Anchoring the program is George Balanchine’s masterpiece, The Four Temperaments. Balanchine choreographed The Four Temperaments for the 1946 opening program of Ballet Society, the forerunner of New York City Ballet. The titles of the ballet’s four movements – “Melancholic,” “Sanguinic,” “Phlegmatic,” and “Choleric” – are inspired by the medieval belief that human beings are made up of four different humors that determine a person’s temperament. The stunning illustration of these temperaments, through both movement and the commissioned music of Paul Hindemith, has made this ballet one of the most sought after Balanchine works in history.
UA Dance is the first ensemble in the U.S., and the second ever to perform Jessica Lang’s Escaping the Weight of Darkness. This poetic work, originally created for the National Ballet of Japan in 2014, is set to an emotional score by Olafur Arnalds that conveys a journey between isolation and hope. On a stage illuminated by sculptural lanterns in a black void, the dancers are left to navigate a great divide. The audience is left to see what is visible, and to imagine what is not…
From our faculty is a new work for men by Autumn Eckman, called Gold Jackets, inspired by the monumental music of Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack to the film, The Mission. Internationally renowned Flamenco dancer and teacher Pablo Rodarte presents a classical Spanish piece for 7 dancers to Asturias, composed by Isaac Albéniz and performed live by distinguished guitarist Misael Barraza-Diaz. Afterglow, a piece for women choreographed by Elizabeth George-Fesch, is a collaboration with Fred Fox School of Music faculty member Theodore Buchholz and his recent revival of works for cello and piano by Henry Hadley. Buchholz accompanies the piece along with School of Dance pianist, Mark Schafer.
