LES NOCES | THE AMERICAN | RECESSES
Feb. 15-19, 2017
The Arizona Choir and the UA Dance Ensemble collaborate for a truly unique series of performances featuring Igor Stravinsky’s ballet-cantata Les Noces. 2017 marks the work’s centennial and these performances will be the first time that the work has been performed in Arizona with the ballet. Scored for four pianos, 12 percussionists, choir and dancers, this is a fusion of several of the College of Fine Arts’ premiere ensembles.
Also on the bill and performed by the UA Dance Ensemble is Christopher Wheeldon’s The American. The current Broadway run of An American in Paris, directed by Wheeldon, gives you a glimpse of this British choreographer’s genius. And in The American, his 2001 ballet tribute to this country, he creates a sense of space, tranquility, the great plains, and the open sky.
Finally we bring back to the stage Recesses, a powerful female solo staged and formerly performed by Amy Ernst. This work will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of its choreographer, legendary modern dance icon Bella Lewitzky.
